A lithophane is a picture you cannot quite see until light passes through it. Carved or printed in varying thickness, it looks like a plain pale panel sitting on the shelf. Hold it up to a window and a photograph appears, in glowing detail, as if from nowhere.
How a lithophane works
The trick is thickness. Where the material is thin, light floods through and the image is bright. Where it is thick, light is blocked and the image is dark. Vary the thickness precisely enough and you can reproduce every shade in between: faces, fur, clouds, lace.
A lithophane is not printed ink and not a screen. It is geometry. The image is physically built into the object, which is why it cannot fade the way a printed photo does.
A 200-year-old idea
Lithophanes first appeared in Europe in the 1820s, carved in wax and cast in fine porcelain. Wealthy Victorian households displayed them in windows and lamp screens as small marvels: art that appeared at sunrise and vanished at dusk. The name comes from the Greek lithos (stone) and phainein (to appear).
Then photography got cheap, porcelain carving stayed expensive, and lithophanes faded into antique shops for most of a century.
The modern lithophane: 3D printed from your photo
3D printing brought lithophanes back, better. Software converts a photograph into a relief map: every pixel's brightness becomes a precise thickness. A 3D printer then builds it in thousands of layers, each about 0.1mm thick.
At 3D Moments we print ours in white recycled PLA on solar powered printers, and a single piece takes 12 to 36 hours to build. Any text, a name or a date, prints thinnest of all, so it glows brighter than the photo around it. We call the finished piece a 3D Moment: our take on the lithophane, with a gently curved panel that catches window light.
What makes a good lithophane
If you are buying one (from us or anyone), quality comes down to four things:
- Layer height. Finer layers hold finer detail. Around 0.1mm is the sweet spot.
- The photo. Clear, well-lit, subject filling the frame. A lithophane faithfully reproduces whatever it is given, including blur.
- Thickness range. Too thin overall and the image washes out; too thick and it goes muddy. The contrast lives in the range.
- A human check. Software happily prints a bad crop. Someone should look at every image first. (We check every single one by hand, and if a photo will not work we say so before printing.)
Do lithophanes need a special light?
No, and this is our favourite part. Natural window light is the original and still the best: the image wakes with the sunrise and sleeps at sunset. In the evening, any lamp or string of fairy lights behind it works beautifully. Ours use no power and no batteries at all.
Why lithophanes make meaningful gifts
A lithophane hides its picture until light arrives, which turns an ordinary morning into a small daily ritual. That is why most of ours are made as memorial keepsakes, newborn gifts and anniversary gifts: photos that deserve to be part of the day, not stored in a phone.
Two hundred years on, the idea has not changed: a picture, kept in stone-like permanence, that appears whenever the light comes back.
